Pomade, Clay or Cream: Which One Your Hair Needs

You walk into the grooming aisle for one jar and walk out confused. Pomade, clay, cream. They all say "styling". They are not the same thing, and the wrong one is why your hair either flops by noon or sits like a helmet.

The short answer: use pomade if you want a flexible hold with shine or a clean matte, clay if you want texture and volume, and cream if you want a natural look with almost no hold. Pick by the finish you want, not by the label.

1. Pomade: for hair you want to control and restyle

A styling pomade gives you a hold you can change through the day. That matters when you comb in the morning and want to fix it before dinner.

The Dapr. Advanced Hair Pomade is water-based, so it does not leave hair stiff or greasy. Apply it to damp hair for a slick shine. Apply it to dry hair, or blow dry while you comb, for a matte, high volume finish. It reactivates with water, so you can restyle without adding more. It also contains avocado oil extract.

What this really means is: pomade suits slick backs, side parts, pompadours and undercuts. It is not for you if you want a messy, lived in texture. That is clay territory.

2. Clay: for texture, volume and a matte finish

Clay adds grip. Each strand looks thicker, and the finish stays dry. That is why it works so well on fringes, quiffs and messy crops. We broke down one such cut in The Textured Fringe That Holds All Day.

The Dapr. Hair Setting Clay is kaolin and bentonite clay based, with medium hold and a matte finish. It adds structure while keeping your natural hair movement.

It is not for you if you want a glossy, polished look. Clay will never give you shine.

3. Cream: for everyday, natural hair

Some days you do not want a style. You want hair that looks cared for. A styling cream is light, moisturising and nearly invisible.

The Dapr. Hair Styling Cream is made for daily use, with vitamin E, olive extract and linseed oil. It gives a natural, low shine look. You can also use it as a pre styler under pomade or clay.

It is not for you if you need a style to survive a long day. The hold is light.

4. Pick by your hair and your day

Product Hold Finish Best for
Pomade Flexible Shine or matte Slick back, side part, pompadour
Clay Medium Matte Fringe, quiff, messy texture
Cream Light Natural Daily wear, pre styling

Frizzy or wavy hair that needs holding down? Pomade. Fine or flat hair that needs body? Clay. Short, easy hair you just want to look healthy? Cream. If you like to switch between looks, the Styling Trio covers all three. For a slick finish at an evening event, see How to Wear the Slick Back in 2026.

5. Apply it right, whichever you pick

Take a nail sized amount. Rub it between your palms. Work it from the roots to the ends with your fingers, then shape with a comb or brush. Too much is the most common reason a good product looks bad. Start small and add.

Action Points (Save This)

  • Choose by finish: shine and control means pomade, matte texture means clay, natural means cream.
  • Start with a nail sized amount and add only if needed.
  • Apply pomade to damp hair for shine, or to dry hair for matte.
  • Use cream under pomade or clay if your hair feels dry.
  • Do not expect shine from clay or strong hold from cream.
